Toyota’s Squaw Valley Campaign
To shoot wintertime footage for Toyota’s Squaw Valley campaign featuring their newest and redesigned product models, including the Tundra, Highlander, Tacoma, and 2013 Rav4.
While ad agency Hoffman/Lewis took care of creative development and post production, Beyond Pix focused on the execution of the shoot itself. Because these shots would be the first wintertime footage of Toyota’s redesigned Rav4 SUV, we wanted to emphasize the beautiful mountainside scenery as well as the car. We decided on using Control Helicopter Cameras to expand the visual palette. Remote control aerial drone cams would allow us to maneuver in tighter shooting spaces and fit leaner production budgets where traditional manned helicopters could not.
- Four different spots including “Don’t Do It,” and “Mountain Calling.”
- Aired during Super Bowl XLVII
- Satisfied clients and strong new partnerships formed:
“I looked at the helicopter as being a really creative solution. And I think the track record that Beyond Pix has for doing things that are kind of outside the box or innovative took some of the risk out of the equation… The outcome was amazing.”

We spent four days in Squaw Valley shooting four different spots featuring Toyota’s Tundra, Highlander, Tacoma, and 2013 Rav4 models. Using single and multi-rotor platforms, we flew a SONY FS700 HD camcorder provided by production partner Copter Kids, based in Reno, NV. These remote control aerial drone cams helped us achieve stunning mountaintop aerials and dynamic running shots on tight alpine roads. Our A-unit shot automotive interiors and all exteriors with a Canon EOS C300 while our second unit shot a winter running package plus B roll using a RED Scarlet and a GoPro Hero3.
